at the mouth of Bayou LaFourche, Donaldsonville was once the economic and cultural hub of the region. For one year, Donaldsonville was the Louisiana state capitol and the birthplace of Francis T. Nicholls, Civil War hero and Governor of Louisiana.
The Historic Donaldsonville Museum presents life as it was at the Turn-of-the-Century through "Galleries of the Past." The museum is housed in the B. Lemann & Bro. building which was the oldest family-owned and operated department store in Louisiana. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is an impressive two and one-half-story structure and has been described as "the finest Italianate commercial building in any river town north of New Orleans." It is evidence of the prosperity and cultural variety around Donaldsonville in the 1800s. We invite you to view the past as we strive to preserve and present the heritage of Donaldsonville and its surrounding area to people of all generations.
